“Who am I?”

Maybe you’ve never even asked yourself this question. You might think you already know who you are. Unfortunately, however, it’s likely that you don’t know who you are at all. And if you don’t know your real identity, you’re in trouble. You’ll spend your life in a kind of dream state—you’ll falsely identify yourself as something or someone you aren’t. Then, on the basis of this false identification, you’ll determine the goals of your life and the purpose of your existence. You use these goals to gauge whether you are making “progress” in life, whether you are a “success.” And you are aided and abetted in this delusion by a complex network of relationships with other dreamers. Of course, at death (and sometimes before), the whole thing turns into a nightmare.

So knowing who you are is a very practical necessity. The question “Who am I?” is not a philosophical football meant to be kicked around coffeehouses by pseudo-intellectuals. It’s a real-life question. Nothing is more important and more relevant than to know who you are.

Teaching to the Non-Existent

Jagad Guru: Teaching... Teaching itself. The attempt that these guys have, they write articles in these scientific journals, right? And they, they uh, uh, give their lectures at the universities and so on. They're try-, they're promoting, actively promoting, like B.F. Skinner's whole book, Beyond Freedom and Dignity, is an attempt to convince us that we do not exist in these bodies, that there is no self, there is no being within the body using it. There's just a body that engages in complex behavior due to programming, and it therefore appears to have a self in it.

The Conclusion of Ancient Philosophers

Jagad Guru: So, basically, what the point is that we're, we're, coming to understand is that there is no material self in the body made of some molecules or chemicals or whatever, okay? Now the materialists have concluded, therefore, since there's only one energy and there is no material self, there is no material being in the body, somewhere looking out. They have concluded that, therefore, there is no self at all. They are the no-self philosophers, okay? But it's so absurd, how can we accept this, you see?
